Division 1 Review 23rd January

The Northern 1st Team fielded their strongest side of the season as they enjoyed having both Moustafa ElSirty and Elliot Morris Devred available. The two highly ranked stars were too much for a weakened Liverpool team, however Lewis Harding gave a great account of himself against the powerful Egyptian in the number one string match.. Even though he lost in three games, the first and the third were extremely competitive and Lewis deserves to feel pleased with his performance. This was an important win for The Northern after losing their first two matches of 2024.

The Northen 2nd team did not fare so well, losing 5-0 to Alderley Edge. But, this fixture produced two absolutely stunning matches. The no.1 match was Elijah Thomas vs Ali Khawas. Throughout the match Ali was in all-out attack mode, firing the ball into the front corners, while Elijah was desperately trying to contain him with his accurate drives. The match couldn't have been closer with Elijah twice taking the lead, only to be pegged back by Ali. The fifth game was anyone's, but as the big Egyptian begun to tire, the home played started to look like the favourite to take it. Indeed he did, but only just, closing out the final game 11-9.

The no.2 match was Yorkshireman Tom Bamford vs the Warrington based Josh Owen. Tom can move the ball around the court with delightful skill, floating in 3-wall-boasts willy nilly, while Josh plays a fast game, encouraged by his dad, celebrity coach, Rob Owen. Tom fought hard and won his two games on tie breaks, and then would follow them up with a 'rest' game. A plan which obviously worked as he had enough in the tank to beat the fit Josh, 11-8 in the fifth.

Elsewhere, the top two teams both won. Cheetham Hill beat City Of Manchester 5-0, a great result considering they were forced to play almost their B-Team, with a particularly satisfying first team outing for Matty Major. Matt has been bossing the second division this season, and shone last night, using his array of all court attacks, beating the determined COM captain, Haaris Vine. Bowdon slightly disrupted Warrington's party with a brilliant performance by Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, beating Ollie Hudson. Other than that Warrington were not too troubled. Resurgent 'oldie' Badger Billson looked great in the first game against the tall Grimsby Grenade, Ben Smith. Ben just proved a bit too good, and a bit too big for Pete. As the match went on Ben found some sublime backhand volley drops that Ramy Ashour would have been proud of.

Wigan travelled to Wrexham, slightly delayed by motorway traffic, for what was always going to be a rough ride! The lanky figure of Nat Fairhurst was the only victory for the away team, but Mason Smales put in his best performance to date, as he almost toppled Wrexham’s no.1, Owain Taylor. Mason and Owain are both big guys, but very fair. Owain is in top form, fresh from beating Finlay Withington. Mason looks to dominate the middle of the court with his big figure, and it all came together nicely as he played some great, powerful squash. I’m the end though, Owain had that extra bit of control to manoeuvre the ball around the court, to tire his solid opponent. Wrexham claimed a valuable 4-1 win.
